“The power of art lies within its power
To reach out and reach in.
Cave paintings to Crayons
Clutched in chubby child fingers.
Since the beginning. Since our beginnings.
From Source.
Our natural, creative nature has always been with us:
To shine a light, to make connections.
Bringing people together. To educate, to inspire.
Breaking down. Breaking through.
Barriers on the outside. Barriers on the inside.
The inner work of reflection: Help me make sense of this.
The outer work of expression: Here. Here. This is how I feel.
Understanding. Healing. Discovery.
To spark a revolution. From the inside out.
Let the work speak for itself. Don’t rush to name or explain.
Peel the labels off. One by one.
Art. Creativity. Good. Bad.
The arts are elemental and essential.
Open to all.”
DMK
Words scrawled in a sketchbook as I began discovering the why behind my work.
I’ve been drawing my whole life. From the beginning when my parents divorced and I didn’t have words to express myself, to working out what I wanted from life, to travelling across the world to Japan where I now live.
Learning what drawing could do. Discovering what’s possible, with only a blank page and a pencil.
Years ago, I wrote this down as I left full time employment and explored further.
Getting drawing out to a wider audience. From children to adults. I kept seeing people light up and have never looked back.
Drawing to me is much more than the skill itself. It has helped me release stress, process change, express myself, spark ideas and bring people together.
And, in the digital age, human expression and creativity have become more valuable than ever. I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned with you.
