Creativity blooms at Afrika Rose Tokyo as our new students take to the page!
Congratulations to my latest graduates, Spring Course is go and…new classes at Tokyo American Club!
From “I want to draw again…” to “I’m more open minded, I want to draw more, I’m more creative and I enjoy life even more – I want to continue my art journey!”
Pencil, to pen, to colour, to the face in the mirror, these guys have been a JOY to be with and it was wonderful meeting their friends for their final exhibition day!
“Dear Divya, thank you for teaching me about drawing! I’ve learned a lot from your workshop, “When in doubt, draw!” I had mixed feelings about drawing, but now I see the possibilities of creating a piece of art by looking at nature and persevering with my work. Spending Friday afternoons with you has enriched my life!”
Congratulations also to my most recent graduate, Barbara. She dived wholeheartedly into the process – the place discoveries are made and treasure’s found. Thank you with all my heart and best wishes with the next stage. Keep your sketchbook close to help with the changes ahead- now you know what to do and that this is only the beginning!

Event At Tokyo American Club with Classes Starting Soon!
An intimate evening with Mama and I – sharing our story, the events that have led up to When In Doubt, Draw and the many ways creativity has helped not only me, but others move forward with fresh perspectives and ideas.
I talked about how I began drawing as a kid, not really understanding why, but more to have a space of my own to come to terms with what was happening around me at the time and to express feelings I didn’t have the vocabulary for.
I also spoke of how people always seem to find me when they’re at a crossroads. Facing a big decision, lifestyle change or transition. Looking for tools. Something to work things out with. I love the many tools we have to chose from now. Meditation, mindfulness and colouring books are becoming less and less “woo woo” and increasingly mainstream in our search for meaning, purpose and connection.
And ways of switching off an overactive mind fed with constant streams of information coming at us from all directions!
Doubts, fears and frustrations keep coming alongside the joys, wins and successes.
Exploring ways of processing, and simply being with, both is something I’ve always been interested in. Not running away. Sitting still with all of it. A big thank you to TAC Librarian, Jennifer Diaz, for this incredible opportunity and to friends for joining us. The stories shared and conversations had, made up a night I’ll never forget. Happy we could continue at the bar later!
And, for Tokyo American Club members, I’ll be starting a course at TAC this September! For details on classes, click here and to register and reserve your place email: info@divyamariekato.com or via the TAC website.
Recent Drawings
I live in Tokyo. I like drawing. I share it with people big and small. My mama’s here. We love walking, talking and trees. She should have a cape. My husband has a heart of gold. He plays guitar and we make up songs to sing. His parents love me. My parents love me. We’ve all had rollercoaster relationships. And here we are. We have food to eat and friends to play with and warmth and health and love and dreams. For all this, and so much more, here and now, thank you.

National Pencil Day
Happy #nationalpencilday to friends big and small. Yes, it’s a pencil. But it’s also a chance to make something out of nothing that leads you somewhere else. And for this, and so much more besides, humble pencil, I’m eternally grateful.
Tree Studies
“Do you know that even when you look at a tree and say, “That is an oak tree”, or “that is a banyan tree”, the naming of the tree…comes between you and actually seeing the tree? To come in contact with the tree, you have to put your hand on it and the word will not help you to touch it.” – Krishnamurti, Freedom from the Known
Tree studies continue with different ways of getting to know what we call “tree” is. Enjoyed standing next to a man doing tai chi next to a tree and then being here with little humans and their own ways. (they’re closer of course.) All of us, for a moment, stepping out of a world of words.
With Mama being here, we’ve had lots and lots and lots of tree time. And what timing! Hanami (Japanese cherry blossom viewing) on wheels was like walking on clouds: “They waited for me!” Yup, looks like they did!

As adults, we often lose sight of our creativity:
Always wanted to draw, but think you’re not good enough?
Did you draw before when you were a kid, but now you’ve left it behind?
Heard all these great things about creativity and drawing and how it helps you release stress, problem solve, spark ideas…but you don’t know where to start or it’s been a while?
Well, did you know that drawing’s the easiest way to get it back?
Through drawing, we can rediscover our creative selves and receive inspiration, happiness, creativity and joy in the process. Drawing’s also frequently used in forms of art therapy, personal and professional development, for its cathartic, stress releasing and idea sparking properties.
